Advisory Committee on Mathematics Education (ACME)
Aim
To act as a single voice for the mathematical community, seeking to improve the quality of education in schools and colleges by advising Government on issues such as the curriculum, assessment and the supply and training of mathematics teachers.
Background
Gatsby supports the Advisory Committee on Mathematics Education’s role in raising the profile of mathematics.
In May 2002 ACME submitted a response to the Government’s 14-19 Green Paper that was explicitly supported by key mathematics organisations.
In its first self-initiated report on Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for teachers of mathematics, ACME called for a national centre for excellence in mathematics teaching. In March 2003 the Government announced its intentions to create such a centre. ACME is working closely with the government’s Post-14 Mathematics Inquiry to ensure that a national centre, with a network of local centres, becomes a reality.
In April and May 2003 ACME organised two consultative workshops for the Post-14 Mathematics Inquiry which examined international ‘baccalaureate’ models and possible 14-19 pathways for mathematics.
