University of Warwick: Teaching Advanced Mathematics - Post Graduate Award in A-level Mathematics Pedagogy
Aim
To provide a structured course for teachers of GCSE mathematics, including those not trained in mathematics, to enable them to teach the subject at A-level.
Background
During this fifteen month course, incorporating two summer holidays, teachers:
- study seven AS/A2 mathematics modules using textbooks and on-line learning resources with email support;
- take part in seven days of workshops at the University of Warwick focusing on A-level mathematics pedagogy;
- teach the equivalent of one A-level mathematics module in their own, or a local, school or college with visits from course tutors.
To qualify for the postgraduate award participants must submit two essays, with a focus on their own experiences of teaching A-level mathematics in the context of relevant research, and a portfolio containing module assignments and evidence of successful mathematics A-level teaching.
Due to the large number of teachers interested in the course plans are currently underway to increase the provision on offer and extend to other universities.
