Educational Broadcasting Services Trust: Mathtutor - Post GCSE Mathematics Support
Aim
To provide and disseminate accessible mathematics support on-disk and online to students at the transition from GCSE to A-level study and to further and higher education in science, mathematics and engineering.
Background
Mathtutor is a major new digital resource now in development. Produced by a consortium of the Universities of Leeds, Loughborough and Coventry with the Educational Broadcasting Services Trust, the first two preview disks, on algebra and trigonometry, are the subject of extensive piloting in schools and universities. Further disks are planned: on differential and integral calculus, geometry and vectors, functions and graphs, sequences and series, and arithmetic.
The core element of the resource is the video tutorial, in which experienced mathematicians teach key topics to camera. Diagnostic tests, extended text expositions and interactive exercises link with the tutorials, and extension materials include animations, and filmed actuality of mathematical applications.
Mathtutor links with www.mathcentre.ac.uk a complementary website which features much of the Mathtutor content, news and related resources.
Mathtutor will be useful for:
- Students of GCSE/AS/A-level mathematics
- Teachers of GCSE/AS/A-level mathematics
- Non-specialist teachers of mathematics
- Students and staff in Further and Higher Education.
