University of Sussex: In-School Teacher Education Programme (INSTEP)
Aim
The programme aims to improve the quality of science teaching in partnership schools and the quality of newly trained science teachers.
Background
The programme will:
- enhance learning opportunities through two-way interactive video systems and webcams and utilising broadband technology
- widen access to this web-based resource, first to schools within the Sussex Consortium for Teacher Education and Research (SCTER), then to schools and universities outside the Sussex partnership
- extend the use of this new resource to augment Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities in the participating schools; and develop greater involvement of parents and governors in the science education activities of their schools and, through contact with University scientists, in science more generally
- develop key partnership schools as hubs for the discussion and evaluation of project activities and other matters pertaining to science education within their local area
- use ongoing evaluation to ascertain strengths and areas for further development and make appropriate modifications to the programme of activities
- enable schools with high quality science teaching to increase their ITT capacity for science placements
The programme is being developed in partnership with the Sussex Consortium for Teacher Education and Research (SCTER). This Consortium, formed in 1995, now includes over 60 schools and colleges in Brighton and Hove, East Sussex and West Sussex and the University of Sussex School of Education. In the first instance we are working with six schools from within the SCTER.
