Mathematical Association: Research into why mathematics teachers leave teaching
Aim
To identify the key factors that influence decisions made by secondary mathematics teachers to leave the profession, and to make suggestions for actions that might improve retention.
Background
The Smith Inquiry report ‘Making Mathematics Count’ (Feb 2004) identified a serious shortage of well-qualified Mathematics teachers in secondary schools and highlighted the issue of retention, but it offers no evidence to explain why so many Mathematics teachers leave teaching, often within the first five years of entering the profession. This programme will research into the reasons why qualified Mathematics teachers leave the profession, with a view to identifying what action might be taken to help retain them. It is a relatively small-scale study, but it is hoped it might inform larger-scale Government research into the issues it raises.
