Institute of Education: London Mathematics Centre (LMC)
Aim
To establish a model of sustained and collaborative subject-specific continuing professional development (CPD) for secondary mathematics teachers in London.
Background
The London Mathematics Centre (LMC) is coordinating 10-day CPD courses spread over 9 months. LMC officially started on 1 June 2004 and had its first (residential) session later that month. Twenty three secondary mathematics teachers, from three London Local Education Authorities (LEAs) (Camden, Harrow, Tower Hamlets) along with their inspectors and Key Stage 3 co-ordinators, attended the session. While continuing with these LEAs in the coming years, the programme will scale out across more LEAs.
The Institute of Education, University of London, which is directing the LMC, is developing a collaborative model of CPD that will:
- strengthen subject leadership in secondary schools
- update and improve the subject knowledge of teachers
- create a body of mathematics teachers with a high level of confidence in and enthusiasm for their subject
- exploit ICT to enhance teachers’ mathematical knowledge and expand teachers’ repertoires of pedagogical strategies.
The 10-day programme provides a balance between six face-to-face tutored days and four days spent in mentored school-based investigations.
