GTEP - Supporting Science

University of Oxford, Department of Materials: Promoting Materials Science in Schools

Aim

The aim of this programme is to support materials science by supporting teachers and pupils, and creating resources used within the curriculum.

Background

The problem of declining numbers in mathematics, physics and chemistry at school not only affects the core science disciplines but also the take-up of materials science at schools for pupils aged 16-19 can awaken interest in physics, chemistry and mathematics, principally due to the clear relevance of materials production to everyday life. Oxford University has been funded to extend its successful schools programme to promote materials science by supporting teachers and pupils and creating resources to be used within the curriculum. The response so far from both students and teachers has been very positive
