Mathematics in Education and Industry (MEI): Enabling access to Further Mathematics project/on-line learning
Aim
To widen access to AS/A-level Further Mathematics qualifications to all students and to provide on-line resources for AS/A-level Mathematics and other Mathematics courses.
Background
Enabling access to further Mathematics
- Further Mathematics students are tutored through collaboration between schools, colleges and universities, making use of resources on a purpose-written web-site
- Currently there are centres supporting Further Mathematics students at the Universities of Warwick, the University of the West of England, UMIST/University of Manchester, the University of Wolverhampton, the University of Leicester, the University of Leeds, the University of East Anglia/Norfolk LEA, Hertfordshire LEA, Exeter College and Dr Challoner’s Grammar School.
- Between 150 and 200 students are being supported.
- Following the DfES response to the Smith Inquiry into Post-14 Mathematics, the DfES will be supporting a major expansion of the project to 40 – 50 centres.
On-line learning
- Over 100 schools and colleges currently use the on-line AS/A level Mathematics and Further Mathematics resources with about 2000 students with individual passwords.
- This academic year we are running a pilot project to provide on-line resources to support the ‘Engineering Maths 1’ course at the University of the West of England.
- We are also producing on-line resources to support the Additional Mathematics Free Standing Mathematics Qualification for mathematically able year 11 students to study alongside GCSE.
