Physics Enhancement Programme (PEP)
Aim
To increase the number of physics specialist teachers trained each year, by widening the degree base from which they can be recruited.
Background
The Physics Enhancement Programme provides an opportunity for new pools of physics teachers to enhance their knowledge and understanding of physics in order for to successfully obtain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). In addition, participants are offered additional support during initial teacher training and their early teaching years.
The programme consists of three phases:
- A six-month taught bursaried course prior to any route to QTS
- Additional development of physics knowledge during initial teacher training
- Continued professional development during early teaching years (including mentoring, subject support and membership of professional organisations).
The programme is being managed in partnership with the Teacher Training Agency (TTA) and delivered with the support of the Institute of Physics (IOP). A pilot programme is currently underway, with 200 places available nationally from January 2006.
