University of Warwick: PGCE+, National Academy for Gifted and Talented Youth (NAGTY)
Aim
The PGCE+ programme aims to give recently qualified teachers expertise in the teaching of gifted and talented pupils, working alongside on of the NAGTY Summer Schools and with school-based support through their early years of teaching.
Background
The Summer School course provides a unique opportunity to observe and contribute to the teaching of some exceptionally able young people. The programme also involves lectures and workshop delivered by experts in the field of gifted education. By the end of the three week programme the recently qualified teachers have a good grasp of the main pedagogical issues in gifted education and practical experience of strategies in working with the most able.
Participants receive ongoing support through their early years in teaching in the form of mentoring, access to conferences and on-line support from NAGTY, including a discussion forum. Those who complete the course satisfactorily will be able to achieve M level accreditation for their work. They will also be strongly placed to develop their career in school, either as a subject leader or as a Gifted and Talented Coordinator.
Successful pilot courses ran in Summer 2004, at the University of Warwick and Christ Church University College Canterbury, both focusing on mathematics. A science course will start in Summer 2005, with design and technology beginning the following year. Each year thirty new students will join the programme.
