National Association of Head Teachers: Headteacher Leadership and Management Programme

Aim

To provide high quality training and support that will enable school leaders to develop interpersonal leadership through the school.

Background

The programme was initially developed and trialled with headteachers and senior managers from primary and secondary schools in Middlesbrough. Early in 2003 the National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT) took on the management of the programme. NAHT is now rolling out the programme nationally. Fifteen facilitators are working with a total of 150 schools over the duration of the project. Feedback from schools to date is very positive.

Recruitment for Cohorts 3 and 4 (to start in September 2004 and January 2005) is proceeding well. Seventy expressions of serious interest were received within five days of opening the register. The programme has attracted significant interest from schools across all phases all of whom are eager to join the project.

The project enables trained facilitators to work with the leadership teams of participating schools in a way which supports the improvement of whole school teamwork and the quality of professional relationships as a means of improving learning and leading learning. The project is about getting the best out of people through improved interpersonal leadership.
